Santiago de la Ribera is the most populous village of the municipality of San Javier, on the Mar Menor, about 33 kilometres from Cartagena and 52 kilometres from Murcia. It began in 1888 as a summer retreat for families from Murcia and still has villas from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, such as Chalet Barnuevo. A promenade lined with century old palms runs along sandy beaches with calm water, including Castillico, Barnuevo and Colón. The protected wetland of Playa de La Hita lies close by. Civil flights left the local airfield in January 2019 and now use Corvera.
